Beyond the legends, Pietrele Doamnei are very real: 70-metre-high rock formations at an altitude of 1,634 metres in the Rarău Mountains. The highest peak reaches 1,651 metres. The 933-hectare mixed nature reserve is also a Natura 2000 site.
